Caring for children with allergies

Caring for children with allergies

SKU: LSCC11

It is thought that 1 in 4 people in the UK will be affected by allergies at some point in their life. Allergies are particularly common in children and if you work in childcare, it's likely you will be caring for a child with an allergy. Learn about common allergies, how the body reacts to allergens, common symptoms, how to prevent/minimise the risk of direct contact, and the actions to take if you suspect an allergic reaction. This course is suitable for parents, carers, and childcare practitioners.

Learning outcomes

  • If a child comes into contact with an allergen they are sensitive to, they may experience an allergic reaction. Understand the different ways you can come into contact with allergens and know how to prevent it, or limit the exposure. This includes advice on food hygiene and reducing the risk of cross-contamination of food allergens.
  • Understand common allergies, such as hayfever and dust allergy, and common food allergies, such as milk and nuts
  • Know the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction and first aid advice about anaphylaxis
